April 2008 LAYO Soloist: Hye-Won Kim

Hye-Won Kim has appeared as soloist with the La Mirada Symphony, the Brentwood-Westwood Symphony, the Southwestern Youth Music Festival Orchestra and the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra and the UCLA Philharmonia. In addition, she has performed in numerous recitals, winners. concerts and master classes in well-known venues in both the United States and abroad. In 1998, Ms. Kim was awarded first prize in the ARTS Competition sponsored by the National Foundation for Advancement in Arts in Miami, Florida, where she was one of five pianists in country invited to compete. She also performed in Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory in Boston for their national radio show, "From the Top". In the same year, she was one of the three national finalists at the Donna Reed Performing Arts Festival in Denison, Iowa and a recipient of the Young Musicians Foundation Scholarship, performing in their chamber music series which was broadcasted by 91.5 FM, a classical radio station in Los Angeles. Most recently, she performed at the Gewanthaus in Leipzig, Germany.

Ms. Kim has an impressive list of awards received from many competitions and auditions. She is the grand prize winner of the LA Korea Times Competition and Peninsula Young Artist International Competition. She has also won prizes in the Music Teachers Association of California Concerto Competitions, the Bryan Lee Concerto Competition, the LA Liszt Competition, the Pacific University Piano Competition, REACHOUT Young Artist Competition, and the Young Artist International Competition.

Ms. Kim has also participated in numerous summer festivals, including the Russian School (Freiburg, Germany), the International Institute of Music (Markadoberdolf, Germany), the Kniesel Hall Chamber Music Festival (Maine), the Shandelee Music Festival (New York), the Yellowbarn Chamber Music Festival (Vermont), Leipzig Music Academy (Leipzig, Germany), and the Banff Music Festival (Banff, Canada) as a scholarship student where she performed in various concerts. She has also given recitals in Zipper Hall at the Colburn School, Schoenberg Hall at UCLA, and Morse Hall and Paul Hall at The Juilliard School. Ms. Kim has also performed in several chamber music series at Juilliard Theater and Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Ms. Kim started piano lessons at the age of five. Her major teachers include Ick-Choo Moon, Jerome Lowenthal, and Robert McDonald. Ms. Kim received both the Bachelor and the Master of Music degrees as a scholarship student from the Juilliard School in New York. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance at UCLA, where she studies with Walter Ponce and is also his teaching assistant. Most recently, Ms. Kim was awarded the Elaine Krown Klein Scholarship from UCLA.
